From Wednesday 26 July 2023, Harewood Bridge will close to traffic for four weeks to allow for waterproofing, resurfacing and foot path repairs to be carried out. An advance notice will be sent out to help local residents and businesses to allow for any plans to help mitigate the closures and we plan to do this on 1st June 2023. The content of the communications and letter on this will include the below. Please can you not share this information as we are still confirming all the detail.
To minimise disruptions, the road closures and works are planned to coincide with the reduced levels of traffic over the school holidays and a fully signed road diversion plan will be in place.
Temporary repairs were made to extend the longevity of the carriageway, however these repairs can no longer continue without fixing the underlying problem.
The additional waterproofing repairs will lead to:
- an increased reliability of journeys and reduction in congestion caused by unplanned emergency closures for carriageway repairs
- reduced risk of accidents caused by potholes in carriageway
- reduced risk of damage to vehicles caused by potholes in carriageway.
Leeds City Council are working with North Yorkshire Council and construction partner Balfour Beatty on traffic management for advanced road warnings ahead of the works. We are hoping to keep the duration of the bridge closure to a minimum.
Local access will still be maintained for people walking, wheeling, and cycling to use the bridge.
The diversion plan can be found on the Leeds City Council website and has been shared with local residents and businesses. Leeds council will be carrying out further communications to make road users aware of the closures. The diversionary route principally concerns traffic that needs to go between Leeds and Harrogate. The A659 from Pool to Harewood via Arthington will be open but is not being recommended as the main route for through traffic between the two main centres.
