Coronavirus – help for people

Community Care Volunteers – Covid-19

Harewood Parish Council is very conscious of the many offers of help that are being offered to local elderly and vulnerable people to help them cope with the present situation. We would wish to encourage this and thank those offering their time to help those who are in difficulty at this present time. There are however some risks and it is important that those needing help are not exposed to anyone who might seek to exploit an opportunity to meet concerned people in their homes.

Our local Leeds Councillors have advised us of a scheme which all those seeking to volunteer should use in order to become involved and serve those in need in our community.

Please follow the link Community Care Volunteers to see details on how to join the dedicated volunteer network.

Planning go-ahead for Recreation Project

Following some detailed changes to the proposed recreation area off Malt Kin Lane that were required to meet current environmental priorities, Leeds City Council has now granted full planning permission for the project.

Revised project plan.

The Council hopes that work can shortly begin to start planning the next stages of the development and further information will be made available through this web site as soon as it becomes available.

Wigton Moor Christmas Lights

Our Christmas lights came on at approximately 4pm on Sunday 1st December 2019.

The scene on High Ash Drive

At least 70 local residents with children and friends came along to be present as the Sun went down and the festive lights came on automatically for the first time. Afterwards those attending were invited into Wigton Moor United Reformed Church where the congregation generously provided mulled wine and mince pies. Afterwards some carols were sung.

The gathering was addressed by Councillor Doug Masterton (Vice Chair of Harewood Parish Council) who introduced the Councillors representing Wigton Moor and wished those attending a very Happy Christmas.

Petition against heavy goods vehicles using the A659

A petition has been started to ask Leeds City Council Highways to look at an HGV restriction on the A659 between Collingham and Pool-in-Wharfedale (including Harewood and Arthington). There will be HGVs that need to essentially move through the area e.g. farm vehicles or deliveries, so this is more about the large multiple axle, 10 wheel juggernauts.

This is the link to the petition. Sign the petition.
With over 500 people signed up already there is clearly a public mood to see a review.

Harewood Parish Council has been notified of this petition by Leeds Councillor Mathew Robinson who is seeking a wider look at HGVs using roads in the Outer North East. He is keen to get greater clarity on all the restrictions and enforcing them. At the moment there seems to be little clarity. He wishes to reassure constituents that the above petition is not intended to move HGV traffic onto other roads e.g.A58, but rather that they should use the A1 as was originally intended.

Harewood Parish Councillors are concerned about the considerable rise in the number of heavy goods vehicles now using the A659.

Community Hub in Wigton Moor

At their meeting on 16th May 2019, Harewood Parish Councillors learned of the vision of members of Wigton Moor Church to expand their facilities in order to support a wider range of services to support the local community. As the church offers the only provision in Wigton Moor supporting community activities, Council members enthusiastically backed the project and made a grant of £5000 towards initial building work. In the first instance, Wigton Moor Church is aiming to raise £73,000 in order to build a kitchen and improved toilets which are badly needed in order to help it support activities which benefit the community

Harewood Parish Council is currently holding its regular meetings at Wigton Church.
