My LEEDS Summer Picnic will be held on Sunday 9th July from  12:30-4pm at  Thorner Victory Hall

Everyone from the various communities in the Harewood ward is invited to attend this free event, bring a picnic along and celebrate culture in our community. Those attending can expect to:

  • BE ENTERTAINED: a local band, a vintage-style dry-land synchronized swimming dance act, a pop-up ‘suitcase’ theatre group, a locally-themed edible art installation
  • GET CREATIVE: a gingerbread decoration workshop, a fashion photo booth, a writing workshop and a storytelling session
  • CONNECT WITH OUR COMMUNITY: various community and charity groups will be sharing information about what they do and invite people to join them e.g. sport, local history, environment, creative writing, over 60s etc.
  • ENJOY REFRESHMENTS: bring your own or have the option to buy from local vendors
  • CELEBRATE OUR LOCAL AREA: artists, performers, stallholders and vendors are all local. They include (and are not limited to) creatives and community groups from Shadwell, Barwick, East Keswick, Collingham, Aberford, Thorner, Scarcroft etc.
  • EXPLORE: in advance of the picnic, we will also be running an imaginative and fun ‘storyhunt’ with prizes to encourage people to get out and about in our area as well as join the event on the 9th July.

You too can participate. There are still a couple of spots left for stallholders – Any local community/cultural groups interested are asked to email Becky Smith at harewoodhost@leeds2023.co.uk if they are interested in having a stall?

Closure of Harewood Bridge for four weeks

This information has been provided by Leeds City Council

From Wednesday 26 July 2023, Harewood Bridge will close to traffic for four weeks to allow for waterproofing, resurfacing and foot path repairs to be carried out.  An advance notice will be sent out to help local residents and businesses to allow for any plans to help mitigate the closures and we plan to do this on 1st June 2023.  The content of the communications and letter on this will include the below. Please can you not share this information as we are still confirming all the detail.

To minimise disruptions, the road closures and works are planned to coincide with the reduced levels of traffic over the school holidays and a fully signed road diversion plan will be in place.

Temporary repairs were made to extend the longevity of the carriageway, however these repairs can no longer continue without fixing the underlying problem.

The additional waterproofing repairs will lead to:

  • an increased reliability of journeys and reduction in congestion caused by unplanned emergency closures for carriageway repairs
  • reduced risk of accidents caused by potholes in carriageway
  • reduced risk of damage to vehicles caused by potholes in carriageway.

Leeds City Council are working with North Yorkshire Council and construction partner Balfour Beatty on traffic management for advanced road warnings ahead of the works. We are hoping to keep the duration of the bridge closure to a minimum.

Local access will still be maintained for people walking, wheeling, and cycling to use the bridge.

The diversion plan can be found on the Leeds City Council website and has been shared with local residents and businesses.  Leeds council will be carrying out further communications to make road users aware of the closures. The diversionary route principally concerns traffic that needs to go between Leeds and Harrogate. The A659 from Pool to Harewood via Arthington will be open but is not being recommended as the main route for through traffic between the two main centres.

Planning permission refused for Wike Golf club development and holiday lodges

The substantive proposals for the development of the Leeds Golf Centre in Wike were turned down by the North and East Leeds Plans Panel at its meeting held on the 12th May 2022. Councillors were attracted by the vision of the company to develop access to golf activities to a much wider community and understood the importance for commercial development and profitability in order to achieve this goal. However the case for the development of holiday lodges was not considered sufficiently strong.   Special circumstances are required in order to set aside current Leeds Council Green Belt Policy  and which would be needed to permit their construction. No very Special Circumstances were evidenced that were considered sufficient to clearly outweigh the resulting harm to the Green Belt.

Leeds Councillors were not averse to appropriate development of the club house and the ranges but these would now have to be subject to a future planning application.

Leeds Councillors’ decision was informed by officers reports, objections from local residents, submissions from the developer and the associated charity.

A recording of the full meeting can be watched at Leeds North and East Plans Panel 12th May.

The public reports informing the meeting including the officers’ recommendation for rejection of the proposals can be accessed at North and East Leeds Plans Panel Documents 12th May.

Petition to install a real time bus stop display at High Ash Shops

The Transport Authority for West Yorkshire does not consider the bus service to Wigton Moor sufficiently frequent to merit an electronic display at the terminus stop by High Ash shops. If one of the hourly services is cancelled this can leave passengers uninformed and distressed waiting at the bus stop for a long period. A petition for a sign to be installed has been opened by Harewood Parish Councillor Ros Bystryakov and is supported by the Council.

Please will you consider signing the petition which you can access using the link below.
