Harewood Recreation Project

The Parish Council is progressing its plan for the recreation area on Malt Kiln Lane at the side of the Harewood Arms.  A contractor and project manager have recently been appointed to deliver this long awaited amenity for Harewood. We hope work on site will begin as soon as possible.  The Recreation Project Design shows the scope of what is envisaged. The project will be implemented in two stages. Our aim is to have the play area and hard court open in Spring 2021. Updates on progress will appear in future newsletters and, if Covid-19 permits, we look forward to seeing you at the Grand Opening ceremony!

Traffic and Parking issues in Harewood

The Council remains concerned about the number of vehicles speeding through Harewood and Wike villages, and along Wigton Lane. If you spot vehicles driving at excessive speed you can use the  101 Live Chat service operated by West Yorkshire Police  to report their details (make, model and registration number, if possible).

We are also very aware of the increasing inconvenience caused by the numbers of cars being parked in and around Harewood. The lay-by on Wike Lane is a popular parking place for walkers and mountain-bikers. Particular concerns have been raised  lately as overspill along the lane has caused obstruction on the narrow road and endangered pedestrians, The Parish Council has no authority over parking but the issue has been raised with local Leeds Councillors and with Leeds City Council Highways. The City Council is the parking authority and is also responsible for the enforcement of any restrictions.

The increase in Heavy Goods Vehicles using the A659/A61 through Harewood village has given rise to complaints from residents. It is difficult to find a solution to this problem as both roads are major arterial routes but Harewood Parish Council is working with Ward Councillors and neighbouring Parish Councils to raise this matter formally with Leeds City Council. We will publish details of our joint letter to the LCC Chief Executive, Tom Riordan, on our website in due course.

Crime Prevention

Advice has been published by West Yorkshire Police on steps that residents may take to reduce the risk of theft from property. Their poster on Preventing Residential Burglary provides useful tips on how to reduce risk.

Keeping streets and road clean

Nobody likes to see litter along our road-sides and pavements; it's unsightly and plastic waste can endanger wildlife. The Parish Council sincerely requests all residents to ensure that litter and waste is not dropped in the road or on the pavement, or thrown from car windows. Particularly offensive are the food and drink wrappers regularly dropped on the Memorial Garden. There is a waste bin just a few metres away! Equally unpleasant is dog waste discarded in bags and left by the wayside, or hung in trees and hedgerows. It is a small minority of people who do not care for our environment but it is the responsibility of us all to protect it. We ask you to take the greatest care to prevent littering and pollution in our Parish district.
